Rodent Control: Rats & Mice
Roof rats and field mice are the most common rodents invading homes in our area. A roof rat, also called a black rat, tree rat, or grey-bellied rat, is a great climber and can easily scurry up trees, phone poles and wires, rain gutters, or the side of your house looking for a nesting place. They prefer to nest in elevatated areas such as your attic, but they may also take up residence in the sub area of a house. A rat only needs an opening the size of a quarter to get into your house, while a mouse only needs space the size of a dime! Rodents can cause serious health concerns, as they are known vectors of disease, carry harmful parasites, and cause contamination to food. Additionally, due to their constant gnawing, rodents have been known to cause many household fires from chewing on electrical wiring.
The first step in a successful rat control program is a thorough property inspection by a Killroy Pest Control technician, looking for pest harborage areas, entrance points, possible food sources, etc. Your Killroy technician will identify these problem areas and recommend the best solutions and treatment strategies. Trapping is usually recommended first, followed by sanitation improvements, and exclusion work around the home for the best long term rodent control results.
People can do a lot to reduce rodent problems by maintaining proper sanitation and keeping a tidy yard. For example, it is important to not leave pet food outside overnight as rodents are attracted to this easy food source. Additionally, it is helpful to keep trees and bushes pruned away from structures to limit rodent access to your home.
